Thank You for Showing Up! Service Project

Thank the people in our community who are keeping our food, utilities and other necessities going during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Why is it important?

We’re all doing our part to stop the spread of the corona virus by staying home as much as possible. But not everyone can stay home.  Healthcare workers and first responders are on the front lines of facing the corona virus, but they’re not the only ones.  People still need food, medicine, electricity and other basic essentials, and there are many people in our community making that possible. Grocery store cashiers, carryout restaurant workers, delivery and postal workers, cable repair workers, and janitors are just a few examples of people who can’t work from home and who risk exposure to the virus every day.  And it’s because of them that everyone is able to continue getting the most important things that we need during this time.  One way that you can show them support is to share a special “thank you.”

What supplies do you need?

  • Paper
  • Markers/ crayons/ paint…whatever you have at home!
  • Device to record video for social media

What steps do you need to take?

  1. Make a list of all the products or services that your family needs or is relying on during this time (groceries, gas, utilities, etc.)
  2. Create a “thank you” that can be shared with the people who work in all of these industries and are ensuring your family has what you need. Examples:
    • You can make a thank you card for the cashier at the grocery store, the clerk at the drive-thru window, or as a note to leave for the mailman.
    • You can also make a video to share on social media with the companies that support your family but that you wouldn’t see in person, like utilities workers, internet providers, etc.
  3. No matter which kind of thank-you you make, your goal is to make the recipient smile and know that they are appreciated, here are some tips:
    • Share how their work is helping you and your family and what that means to you.
    • Go for the smile… add color, drawings, songs, or jokes… anything that might make someone laugh or brighten their day!
  4. You can post videos or pictures of your thank you notes on social media and tag the company or organization that they are for
  5. AND be sure to tag @seekidsdream so we can share your thank you’s and inspire others to do the same!

If you want to learn more about the different occupations and their risk associated with corona virus, here’s an interactive bubble chart to check out: “Workers who face the greatest risk with corona virus” (requires you to sign up for a free subscription to New York Times, just an email and password are needed)

How did it go?

  • How did you feel after creating a list of all the things your family needs and all the people that your family relies on to have those things?  Did you ever think about this before?  Why or why not?
  • How does this activity make you think about the word: “community”?  Who is part of your community?
  • Try to imagine how each person will feel after they receive your thank you… how do you think they will feel?  And how does that make you feel?  Can showing thanks to others be helpful during times that are stressful?  What do you think?
