Program Descriptions
Meals-on-Wheels: provides nutritious meals and a daily visit to home-bound, older adults, and individuals living with a medical challenge and/or disability, 365 days a year. Meal options include hot, cold, frozen, specialty diet, kosher, vegetarian, pureed, and mechanical soft. The Meals-on-Wheels program delivers approximately 5,000 meals a day, and also provides meals for children in day care and after-school programs. In 2013, volunteers and staff delivered 901,765 meals to 5,025 clients.
Columbus Cancer Clinic: provides cancer prevention and education, head-to-toe cancer screenings, examinations, and mammograms. The Clinic’s mammography unit is mobile and can be transported into places such as community centers, churches, etc. The clinic provides home care support services at no cost to people living with cancer.
Project OpenHand-Columbus: provides specially enriched home-delivered meals, healthy foods, exams, and counseling to men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS in central Ohio.
Groceries-to-Go: Pantry provides groceries, personal hygiene items, and household cleaning supplies to clients of Project OpenHand-Columbus and the Columbus Cancer Clinic. These clients are living with HIV/AIDS and/or active cancer.
Senior Dining Centers: provide meals for older adults and individuals living with a medical challenge and/or disability at community dining centers and restaurants in 18 locations across central Ohio, including culturally diverse meals at 11 Asian and Somali restaurants. Transportation is available to most locations. LifeCare Alliance is the largest provider of senior meals through community dining centers in both central Ohio and the state, according to the Ohio Department of Aging. Dining centers offer socialization, enriching programming, and a nutritious meal with the purpose of promoting successful aging among central Ohioans.
Senior PetCare: provides pet care for clients so that they can remain in their own home. The program helps with pet care and veterinary visits and implements AniMeals routes, which deliver pet food and supplies to clients’ homes.
Help-at-Home: provides help with daily living activities, bathing, fall prevention, and basic household chores to individuals in need. The program also coordinates safety and health-related home repair projects for clients, such as electrical and plumbing maintenance, grab bar and railing installations, and floor and drywall repairs.
Wellness Services: provide health care services in areas where access to financial resources and/or health care are limited. A focus is on health education, disease prevention, and care of chronic diseases. Services include, but are not limited to, health exams, nursing care, help with medication management, screening tests, weight control, diabetes self-management, and many nutrition education programs.
Visiting Nurses: help to connect individuals to health care services needed to maintain their health, nutrition, and well-being.
IMPACT Safety: teaches safety skills to a wide range of people including women, youth, the elderly, individuals living with a disability, and professionals in the workplace. The program’s goal is to provide individuals with the self-confidence, decision making, and increased knowledge/awareness to prevent violence and protect themselves from physical, financial, and emotional abuse.
