Community Safety

What is community safety about?

Community safety is when an area like a neighborhood, apartment complex, or even a town or city join together and commit to keeping their homes and public spaces safe. Whether it’s creating a block-watch or developing strong relationships with local police, keeping your community safe is something everyone can benefit from.

Is community safety just about crime?

Community safety is not just about preventing violent crime.  Community safety involves making all parts of your community as safe as they can be.  When communities have things like sidewalks and bike lanes, they make walkers and bikers safe.  When communities offer programs that address drug abuse prevention, fire prevention, and swimming classes, members of the community are made safer.  Many times community safety comes down to just watching out for one another.

Why is community safety important?

By keeping your community safe, not only are you keeping yourself and others safe from crime and dangerous situations; you are also helping to keep yourself healthy.  Believe it or not, research shows that the stress of living in an unsafe environment can cause long-term damage to kids and adults that can result in physical and mental health problems.
