What is your organization’s mission statement?

Starfish Alliance engages the community to help empower youth in foster care, and alumni of foster care, to defy the gravity of abuse, neglect, loss and separation.

What population do you serve?

We support the children in Central Ohio who are in foster care, and we also support adults who were previously in the foster care system.

How many do you serve in a year?

There are approximately 1500 children in foster care in Central Ohio on any given day that we support.  Through our Link22 program we also support foster care children who are 18 or older and “age-out” of foster care.

What region or area do you provide services in?

Starfish Alliance focuses its efforts in Franklin County Ohio and the Central Ohio community.

How and when did the organization get started?

Starfish Alliance was founded in 2002 with the support of former foster care children who understood the unique needs of children in the foster care system.

In 2012, the LINK22 program was added as a way to provide specialized support to those foster care children who reach 18 and “age-out” of the foster care system.

How many employees do you have?

We have 4 full-time staff members and 7 board members.

How many volunteers does your organization have?  (click the “Service Projects” tab to learn more about volunteer opportunities)

Starfish Alliance relies on hundreds of volunteers and donors each year who provide support for meetings, activities, mentoring and fundraising.

How do your programs or services help the community?

As foster care children become adults they have a much higher likelihood of becoming homeless and/or unemployed. Starfish Alliance offers support, mentoring, and various other services to foster care children in order to increase their chances for success later in life.

Program Descriptions

Mentoring: We partner foster care children with a mentor (who likely was also a foster care child) that can help support them, provide guidance, and be a source of consistency in their lives.

Community Engagement Programs:  Starfish Alliance provides programs and leadership seminars to foster care children that are designed to help them with their future goals, careers, training, and other valuable skills they will need as they become adults.

LINK22:  The LINK22 program provides support to former foster care children ages 18 to 22, as they begin their lives as adults.  This program offers unique guidance and assistance with housing, training, educational resources and other support tools.
