How and when did the organization get started?
———
CHOICES for Victims of Domestic Violence, Inc., formerly Phoenix House, began service to the Central Ohio community in October 1977. CHOICES became one of the first programs in Ohio to address the immediate and long-term needs of battered or abused women and their children. Today, CHOICES has developed from a shelter facility into a program that offers many services to victims, including a 24-hour crisis hotline, counseling services and legal advocates.

How do your programs or services help the community?

———

CHOICES offers safety and healing for victims of domestic violence and their children.

Program Descriptions
———
24-hour Domestic Violence Crisis, Information and Referral Line: CHOICES offers a crisis and information line that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Temporary Emergency Shelter: A dedicated staff has ensured the shelter’s operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, since 1977. Thousands of families have used this residence as a safe, temporary home during times of crisis.

Counseling: CHOICES offers problem-solving counseling, support, resources, and referrals to those victims and survivors of domestic violence who do not require residential services.

Legal Support & Advocacy: Providing a vital link between the criminal justice system and community services, CHOICES’ Legal Advocates walk individuals through an often over-whelming court system.

Community Advocacy: CHOICES collaborates with numerous local organizations in central Ohio to ensure that individuals have access to programs and services that best meet their needs.

Programs for Special Populations: CHOICES provides educational programs and support groups designed for under-served, at-risk communities, as well as the general public.

Community Education & Training: Education is the first step in the prevention of domestic violence. CHOICES strives to educate the community at large about domestic violence in general and CHOICES’ programs and services specifically.
