What region or area do you provide services in?
Amethyst serves vulnerable women and children in the Columbus area. Amethyst helps women with addiction problems stay sober and off the streets. Amethyst also seeks to keep these women’s children safe and healthy throughout the process as well.
How and when did the organization get started?
Amethyst was founded by a group of recovering women in 1984 who wanted to provide long-term support and safe, affordable housing to women recovering from addiction. The agency began with three clients and a donated house. The program was run by volunteers for five years.
As it grew to be successful, Amethyst applied for and received certification to be a treatment provider by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services. Today, Amethyst is recognized nationally for its superior gender-specific recovery program.

In 2014, 440 volunteers provided roughly 5,000 hours of service for Amethyst’s women and children.
How do your programs or services help the community?
Amethyst helps foster healthy families. When a woman arrives at Amethyst, she might be parenting as a sober person for the first time. Since this woman might also have grown up with parents with substance abuse problems or where abuse was prevalent, she might lack some basic parenting skills. Amethyst helps provide women like this with the support and stability they need in order to successfully raise their children and stay healthy themselves.
Permanent Supportive Housing: provides safe spaces for women and children to live. They also provide a good environment to stay on track with sobriety since women and children are surrounded by other families who are focused on this goal. Amethyst currently maintains 101 housing units throughout the Columbus area.
S.T.A.R. Outpatient Program: provides addiction recovery support to women of all backgrounds and financial situations. The Safety, Treatment and Recovery (S.T.A.R.) Program guides clients through making positive treatment choices.
Supported Employment: helps women who are recovering re-enter the workforce. Amethyst realizes that addiction can carry a stigma that may prevent women from finding a good job. Therefore, this program was created to help those women obtain employment and reassure potential employers that these women are addiction-free and reliable.
Trauma Services: help women who have experienced trauma deal with their experiences so they do not relapse during recovering. More than one million women are physically, sexually, or emotionally abused each year. If left untreated, these experiences can trigger women to abuse alcohol or drugs.
Integrated Tobacco Program: helps women who are recovering from addiction quit smoking. People who stop using tobacco while in treatment stay sober longer than those who continue to use tobacco. This program provides intensive support to help women stay free of tobacco, while abstaining from alcohol and other drugs as well.
SummerQuest: provides support and fun to children of parents with addictions. It is a day camp for children (ages 6-14) who have mothers involved in Amethyst’s long-term recovery program. SummerQuest provides counseling, education about prevention, and traditional camp fun.
